Girls' Crystal Annual 1944

£29.99

Product description

The 1944 edition of the popular  Girls' Crystal Annual. Contains 15 stories with drawn illustrations among the text. There are 4 features including a crossword (uncompleted).

According to an article written by Steve Holland on the 'Collecting  Books and Magazines' website,
the bulk of the contents of the annual  were written by men using pen names: "and the known authors were John W. Wheway (writing as Hazel Armitage, Anne Gilmore and Audrey Nicholls), G. Cecil Gravely (as Daphne Grayson) and his wife Doris Gravely (as Doris Graham), C. Eaton Fearn (as Gail Western and Sylvia Macrae), John E. McKibbin (as Elise Probyn), Ronald Fleming (as Renee Frazer and Peter Langley, a rare use of a male pen-name in girls' fiction) and Reginald S. Kirkham (as Hilary Marlowe)."

The front board illustration has light general surface marks and scratches and the rear advertisement has areas of dust soiling and other marks to the white paper, plus an old label mark. Corners are worn and frayed with surface loss and all edges have some wear. The red cloth spine is faded and discoloured and the ends have a little wear and fraying. Text block edges are browned and have some foxing spots, some of which show on the edges of inside pages. End papers are tanned have areas of foxing, mainly around margins. The economy paper leaves are lightly tanned. Occasional pages have small chips to the lower edge. On the front end paper is a Christmas 1943 gift dedication 'To Maureen From Dummy and Daddy'. Although the binding feels very slightly loose there are no breaks
